Health, Safety and Environment
HPL has worked very diligently at being a responsible, professional, competent, and safe contractor in the utility industry and pride ourselves on representing our clients in that manner.
We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment as a prerequisite to our operations. To achieve this, we have put in place a comprehensive system for managing health & safety throughout all areas of operation. We have a well-documented, WCB compliant, health and safety program.
As we have grown our company to our present position of over 200 full time employees in the province of Saskatchewan, we have seen a reduction of incidents, lost time injuries and accidents, all while experiencing significantly higher man hours worked – year over year.
We have changed the way we approach safety & training at HPL over the past few years to achieve this result.
HPL established a Health, Safety and Environment Department and have assigned four full time members to handle all safety & training issues including:
- Leading quarterly safety meetings in each of our operational and contract areas
- Providing health & safety content
- Promoting safety discussions
- Coordinating OH&S Committee Meetings in all areas so that all employee groups are represented
- Coordinating all Drug & Alcohol testing
- Completing regular crew inspections and work site observations
- Monitoring all supervisor and manager crew site observations
- Scheduling and coordinating all training requirements
- Improving safety tool and clothing regulations
- Incident/accident investigations, follow up, and reporting
- Addressing all safety concerns and coordinating enhanced safety training
In addition to being COR Certified since the 1990’s, ISNetworld and Comply Works Registered, HPL has become a Charter Member of Mission Zero and we have Board Representation on the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance.
Enhanced new employee orientation and safety orientation process involving our Human Resources Department as well as our Safety & Training Manager and the appropriate Operations Manager
We have a position specifically addressing on-site crew supervision. This experienced former utility manager spends time in the field coaching staff on safety, work procedures, and efficiency. We feel this will further enhance safety, production, and quality of work.
HPL is committed to a path of environmental sustainability. This means reducing our environmental footprint, promoting environmentally responsible business activities, and offering environmentally responsible products and services. We believe that fulfilling our goals in these areas will lead to short and long-term benefits for our clients, employees, and the communities in which we live and conduct business. While we are proud of our current activities, we are also fully committed to continuous improvement.
HPL’s commitment to safety and continuous improvement is demonstrated by our memberships in Mission Zero, Heavy Construction Safety Association and the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance. As a result of these initiatives, we have seen our lost time incidents fall dramatically in recent years even though our employee hours have increased steadily.
We recognize that employee involvement is critical to the success of the safety program and workers at every level are supported in working in a safe and accountable manner. We are committed to working in consultation and cooperation with our employees to provide a strong safety program.
HPL also recognizes the importance of encouraging the safety of subcontractors on all HPL construction projects and works in partnership with customers, suppliers and subcontractors to encourage safe business practices. HPL has a sub-contractor orientation and monitoring process to ensure safety and transparency.
HPL’s Safety Commitment remains the same no matter which customer we work for, it is our commitment as an organization, and our commitment to our clients.
