Ditch the Extra Dot – Get Your Business it’s Own Domain

When it comes to trying to start a business, gaining credibility and a legitimate reputation is one of the major hurdles that many face. By this, I mean getting people to view you and your business as a professional, and have them be able to rationalize spending their hard-earned money on the goods/services you are providing. My post today is a tip for small businesses that may seem simple, but I can’t stress enough how much it will help:

Ditch the Extra Dot!

By this, I am referring to making your own .com, .ca, .whatever website that is your own. Companies like Wix and Squarespace offer a website that is very easy and user friendly that many think is a great option for their business. I think that by creating a website on these, it is doing nothing but making you lose credibility. Owning your own domain shows professionalism and makes your company legit. Who would you rather spend money on marketing services from: “bombinteractive.com” or “bombinteractive.squarespace.com”? Or if you seen a business card with these two URLs on them, which person would you feel is more credible? Even though your answer may be none of the above, I think you can understand the point I am trying to get across.

This is where many of you say: “I would love my own domain, but I can’t afford to have someone make me a website and I don’t have the computer expertise to make it myself”. There are many different options for you in this scenario, but my recommendation would be to use the web design service like WordPress. It is also extremely user friendly, and offers so many design options that you are bound to find at least a few that will suit your style. Updating, Customizing, and Creating is all very easy through WordPress. The beauty of living in 2016 is also that if there is something that you are unsure of, YouTube will have the answer 99% of the time, including outstanding WordPress tutorials. There are also many other design sites that create themes you can purchase for a very reasonable rate that will give your website a more professional and customized look.

To put it into perspective, I have been operating WordPress websites since before I was in high school, and had my first website when I was 12 years old. I have next to nothing for coding knowledge (you don’t need any with WordPress), and just figured it out as I went. Although it may take some time to get used to operating your own website, I can guarantee you that in the end it will be worth it and your business will grow in a positive way as a result.

So in conclusion, I believe you should create your own individual domain because:

  1. It is Easy (even 12 year old Spencer could do it)

  2. It will make your business more professional & credible

  3. It is inexpensive
